This hybrid mirrorless camera combines high resolution imaging with reliable autofocus and detailed 4K video recording up to sixty frames per second. At its core is a newly developed thirty three megapixel full frame Exmor R back illuminated CMOS sensor that delivers high clarity, reduced noise, and rich color reproduction, even in challenging lighting conditions. The sensor operates across a wide ISO range from one hundred to fifty one thousand two hundred and offers an impressive dynamic range of roughly fifteen stops. Images can be captured in raw, JPEG, or ten bit HEIF formats, providing flexibility for different workflows. Powering the system is the flagship level BIONZ XR processor, which enables fast continuous shooting, smooth 4K video capture, and highly responsive autofocus tracking while also minimizing rolling shutter and motion distortion when photographing or filming moving subjects.

The combination of sensor and processor allows shooting speeds of up to ten frames per second using either the mechanical or electronic shutter with full autofocus and auto exposure support. When paired with a CFexpress Type A card, the camera can record up to eight hundred twenty eight consecutive uncompressed raw and JPEG frames, making it well suited for extended bursts. Video performance takes full advantage of the high resolution sensor with UHD 4K recording at twenty four or sixty frames per second using the full width of the sensor and seven K oversampling for enhanced detail. Oversampled 4K recording is also available from a four point six K Super thirty five crop area, delivering high quality UHD output up to sixty frames per second in ten bit. There is no recording time limit, and the redesigned internal heat dissipation structure supports long recording sessions, including continuous 4K sixty p ten bit four two two capture lasting beyond an hour.

To support different production needs, the a7 IV offers two primary recording codecs. XAVC HS uses HEVC H two six five compression to retain fine detail at lower bitrates, while XAVC S I provides intraframe recording for consistent quality and dependable editing performance at bitrates up to six hundred megabits per second. Color profiles include S Cinetone for natural skin tones and controlled highlights that match Sonys Cinema Line cameras, HLG for HDR ready footage straight from the camera, and S Log three for capturing a wide dynamic range with increased flexibility during color grading.

Autofocus performance is a standout feature, with a fast hybrid AF system covering approximately ninety four percent of the frame using seven hundred fifty nine phase detection points and sensitivity down to minus four EV. This system functions across all shooting modes, benefiting both stills and video. Advanced subject tracking and detection capabilities include AI driven Real time Tracking that analyzes color, pattern, and distance data for fast and accurate focus acquisition. Real time Eye AF further refines precision by detecting and maintaining focus on the eyes of humans, animals, and birds, even if the subject briefly exits the frame. These eye detection features are fully supported during video recording as well.

Videographers gain additional control through adjustable AF transition speeds and subject shift sensitivity, allowing focus changes to appear faster or smoother depending on creative intent. Focus Map provides a visual representation of depth of field using color overlays, while AF Assist enables seamless manual focus adjustments while autofocus is active, making it easier to shift attention between subjects. Focus breathing compensation further enhances video results by minimizing changes in angle of view when pulling focus, subtly cropping the image to maintain consistent framing.

Viewing and handling are improved with a high resolution three point six eight million dot OLED electronic viewfinder that delivers sharper detail and supports both sixty and one hundred twenty frame per second refresh rates. The long eye point and wide field of view enhance comfort and clarity during extended use. A three inch vari angle touchscreen LCD with over one million dots supports front facing operation and flexible positioning for high or low angle shooting, making it especially useful for vlogging and self recording.

Connectivity and interface options are extensive, including a full size HDMI Type A port for secure external recording, a USB C port for fast data transfer and power delivery, and additional ports for headphones and microphones. The Multi Interface Shoe supports digital audio accessories such as shotgun microphones and XLR adapters for cleaner sound capture. Wired LAN connectivity is possible through an optional Ethernet adapter, enabling tethered shooting and FTP transfers.
