Large Format Photography: Life in the Slow Lane In-Person Workshop

What is analog large format photography? What are its benefits? This discussion will provide an introduction to the reasons, the equipment, the processes, and the products of this rewarding art form. From locating the shot to developing the print, if you find manual, hands-on, contemplative efforts to be satisfying, LFP may be for you!

About Mark Bingham

Mark Bingham grew up in the pre-digital era, with Old Chief Mountain serving as one of his most cherished subjects in photography. He was never completely satisfied with the results produced by 35mm film cameras. The transition from a 35mm negative—measuring just 1½ square inches—to much larger formats of 160 or even 240 square inches proved to be transformative. The potential for enhanced detail and emotional impact was deeply compelling, leading him on a long and challenging journey to master the processes of developing and printing.

Mark's initial training in photography came through a university elective titled The Physics of Photography, which offered his first experience in the darkroom. Though his professional career outside of photography became the primary focus for many years, the early 2000s brought new opportunities for creative growth. He attended weeklong workshops led by renowned photographers, Bruce Barnbaum and Don Kirby, which helped to reignite his passion. He was also a member of the Calgary Large Format Users Group for two decades and received valuable mentorship from Eric G. Rose. Beyond that, much of his education in photography came through patience, practice, and self-teaching.
