To keep the unit compact and travel-friendly, audio is recorded to separately available microSD cards—compatible with microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC formats up to 512GB. This allows for long recording times, even at higher resolutions. With a 512GB card, stereo recording can extend beyond 780 hours at standard CD-quality resolution. If you want to send sound to your camera and the DR-05XP simultaneously, connect the output mini-jack to your camera’s input and fine-tune levels using the dedicated control buttons. You can also plug headphones into the same jack for accurate monitoring, or use the built-in mono speaker for quick playback checks.

The USB-C port provides connection to Mac, Windows, or iOS systems for live audio input and output. The DR-05XP can act as a USB microphone or a 2-in/2-out audio interface, supporting real-time monitoring and integration with software. It also functions as a card reader for quick file transfers. You can activate a low-cut filter at 40, 80, or 120 Hz to reduce wind and rumble, and even add reverb presets like hall, room, studio, or plate to enhance your audio. After recording, the treble, mids, and bass can be adjusted to shape playback tone.

Recording features are designed to streamline your workflow. The prerecord setting allows you to capture up to two seconds of audio before hitting the record button. An auto-record mode can trigger recording at preset decibel thresholds, while a self-timer function can delay the start of recording by five or ten seconds. Overdubbing lets you layer a new performance over an existing one, combining both into a new file while keeping the original intact.

To help sync audio with video, the DR-05XP includes an internal tone generator. When linked to a camera, an adjustable auto-tone plays simultaneously on both devices, serving as a visual and audible reference during editing. The device also includes a graphic LCD with a resolution of 128 x 64 pixels and offers menu support in ten languages. Additional features include dictation mode for voice recordings, variable playback speed, automatic file splitting at maximum size, and tools such as a mark function, playlist management, and a built-in chromatic tuner.
