Sony DSC RX1R III Digital Camera

The RX1R III is a compact, high-performance camera that blends portability with features found in Sony's professional mirrorless lineup. This third-generation fixed-lens full-frame model introduces a 61MP BSI CMOS sensor for greater resolution, better autofocus and video performance, an updated body, longer battery life, and continues to use the much-loved ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens. Borrowing the high-resolution sensor from the a7R V and a7CR, it delivers excellent detail, low noise, and a broad 15-stop dynamic range. A copper wiring layer allows faster data readout, producing 14-bit 61MP stills at ISOs ranging from 100 to 32000. The BIONZ XR processor enhances speed, image quality, and responsiveness, enabling the camera to handle intelligent autofocus and AI functions more effectively while minimizing rolling shutter and distortion for moving subjects.

Autofocus performance is significantly boosted with advanced subject detection and a proven hybrid AF system. Real-time Recognition AF supports seven target types. Human mode uses pose estimation for improved eye and body tracking, now 60% more accurate. Animal and Bird modes are now 40% more precise for various species, detecting eyes, heads, and bodies. Insects can be recognized down to their head or full form, while Car/Train and Airplane modes identify critical visual features of fast-moving vehicles. AI-enhanced Real-time Tracking helps maintain focus on subjects even when others cross the frame, making it ideal for sports. The system covers 79% of the full-frame area, or 100% of the APS-C crop, with 693 phase-detection points, and works in all modes, even down to -4 EV lighting. Full-time Direct Manual Focus allows immediate manual control via the lens ring.

AI algorithms help achieve precise exposure and white balance by detecting human skin tones, enhancing reliability in difficult lighting by about 20%. These calculations are supported by external light and IR sensors. The Step Crop function lets you simulate 50mm and 70mm views in-camera, outputting 29MP and 15MP images, respectively. Creative Look profiles now include 12 built-in presets such as nostalgic film-inspired styles and slide film looks, offering visual variety straight out of the camera.

The ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens remains unchanged, offering strong performance for everyday use. Its bright aperture suits low light and allows shallow depth-of-field effects. Optical design includes aspherical elements for sharpness, a nine-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh, and a macro switch that enables focusing from 7.9 to 11.8 inches. The leaf shutter supports flash sync at up to 1/4000 of a second.

Despite its pro-level features, the RX1R III is compact and lightweight, measuring just 4.4 x 2.6 x 2.9 inches and weighing about 1.1 pounds, making it pocketable and travel-friendly. It now supports the larger NP-FW50 battery for around 300 shots per charge. Its updated exterior includes a flat top plate, refined grip texture, and a matte finish, while the magnesium alloy body adds durability and protection from dust and moisture.

The redesigned electronic viewfinder moves to a fixed position for greater reliability. It features a 0.39-inch OLED panel with 2.36 million dots and 0.7x magnification. The rear screen is a 3.0-inch fixed touchscreen, also with 2.36 million dots, allowing for touch AF and tracking. Connectivity options include USB-C for charging and transfer, Micro-HDMI for external monitors, a 3.5mm microphone jack, and a Multi Interface Shoe for accessories like the ECM-B1M shotgun mic or XLR-K3M adapter, which provide digital audio input.

Video capabilities are equally advanced, offering 4K 30p full-frame recording in 10-bit 4:2:2 using XAVC S-I at up to 300 Mbps. It supports S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine for over 15 stops of dynamic range and easier grading, and S-Cinetone for attractive colors and skin tones modeled after Sony's Cinema Line. Users can apply Creative Looks while recording or monitor with custom LUTs on the camera, EVF, or HDMI output.

Sony offers three optional accessories to enhance usability. The LHP-1 lens hood minimizes flare and protects the lens. The LCS-RXL case provides fitted protection while preserving access to ports and compartments. The TG-2 thumb grip adds comfort and stability for one-handed use and can be flipped out of the way when needed.
