Refining one of the most adaptable lenses in Sigma's range, the 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art is a more compact, lighter, and optically enhanced evolution of the well-known wide angle prime. This second generation version introduces a noticeably more portable build along with redesigned optics, a new Advanced Amorphous Coating, and faster, more precise focusing performance, making it an even stronger all purpose option for creators in virtually any setting. The 35mm focal length remains one of the most flexible single focal lengths available, delivering a natural wide angle perspective that suits everything from landscapes and portraits to street photography. Paired with a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, it performs confidently in challenging lighting while also enabling shallow depth of field and smooth background separation for selective focus effects.
The completely reengineered optical construction achieves higher resolution and improved clarity compared to the previous model. The new design incorporates four aspherical elements and two SLD elements to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations, resulting in excellent sharpness, minimal distortion, and accurate color reproduction. By effectively correcting chromatic aberrations, the lens also produces cleaner, smoother bokeh. An 11 blade rounded diaphragm further enhances the look of out of focus highlights, maintaining pleasing circular shapes and contributing to a natural overall rendering. The newly developed Advanced Amorphous Coating adds a low refractive index amorphous layer that significantly reduces flare, ghosting, and surface reflections, delivering strong contrast and faithful color even in backlit conditions.
A blend of updated optics and responsive focusing performance makes this lens equally capable for still photography and dynamic video work. A high thrust dual High response Linear Actuator rapidly shifts the focusing group for quick transitions and reliable tracking of moving subjects. The floating focus system preserves consistent sharpness across the full focusing range, from 11 inches to infinity. Improvements in optical design and focus group placement also reduce focus breathing, maintaining a stable angle of view during focus changes and enabling more natural looking focus pulls for video capture.
Through more efficient mechanical and optical engineering, this second generation model is approximately 14 percent shorter and 20 percent lighter than its predecessor, measuring 3.75 inches in length and weighing 1.2 pounds compared to the earlier version at 4.4 inches and 1.4 pounds. Dust and splash resistant sealing enhances reliability in challenging weather, while a water and oil repellent coating on the front element makes cleaning simple. A manual aperture ring allows direct exposure control and can be de clicked for smooth, silent iris adjustments during filming. Two AFL buttons provide convenient focus position control while tracking subjects and can be customized for additional functions through the camera menu. A focus mode switch enables quick changes between autofocus and manual focus, and the included petal style lens hood features a locking mechanism for secure attachment.
