Designed specifically for astrophotography, the OM SYSTEM OM 3 ASTRO is a specialized Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera body with optical tuning that makes it possible to capture red nebulae constellations and other nighttime subjects with greater accuracy. This purpose built design allows photographers to record celestial scenes that are often difficult to reproduce with standard cameras, making it well suited for deep sky and night sky imaging.

What sets this model apart is a modified infrared cut filter positioned in front of the sensor that delivers full transmission of hydrogen alpha wavelengths. Combined with the TruePic X processor, this configuration enables faithful reproduction of fine detail structure and color in diffuse nebulae and other astronomical objects, resulting in images that better reflect what is visible in the night sky.

The High Res Shot function uses computational photography to merge data from multiple sequential exposures into one high resolution image created entirely in camera. On the OM 3 ASTRO, the handheld High Res Shot mode is recommended even when using a tripod or equatorial mount, capturing and blending twelve frames into a fifty megapixel image with lower noise no motion blur and increased detail. Because each frame is precisely aligned during processing, this mode can also compensate for the natural movement of stars across the sky as well as small alignment or tracking inaccuracies.

Built in color presets help users begin shooting astrophotography and star filled landscapes right away. The first color setting is tuned for deep sky scenes such as nebulae while the second is optimized for wide starry landscapes. In addition, the custom modes are preconfigured for common shooting scenarios with one dedicated to frame stacking for astrophotography another for frame stacking star landscapes and a third optimized for handheld star landscape capture.

Many features found on the standard OM 3 are especially useful for astrophotography including Starry Sky autofocus Live Composite a digital level support for power delivery over USB during shooting and a Night View display mode. These tools help simplify long exposure work and improve usability when working in dark environments.

Optional body mounted filters are also available to further enhance astro and night sky results. These filters fit inside the lens mount and can be used with any attached lens including fisheye and ultra wide options. One filter reduces unwanted artificial light from sources such as street lamps to improve contrast and clarity near urban areas while the other gently softens point light sources so stars appear larger and more prominent within the frame.

Beyond its astro focused modifications, the OM 3 offers flagship level performance creative flexibility and strong video capabilities. It uses a twenty megapixel stacked back illuminated Live MOS sensor paired with the TruePic X engine and a dense autofocus system inherited from the OM 1 Mark II, delivering high speed responsiveness and impressive overall capability in a compact form.

The camera design embraces the classic elegance of an SLR inspired layout with thoughtfully repurposed dials that provide quick access to customizable tools. A dedicated creative dial allows fast switching between custom profiles while a single button groups advanced computational features such as Live ND graduated ND and focus stacking. This streamlined control scheme makes it easy to explore creative techniques ranging from light trail photography to detailed macro compositions.

Five axis image stabilization from OM SYSTEM provides up to six and a half stops of compensation at the center and five and a half at the corners. When used with compatible lenses, Sync IS increases this performance even further delivering up to seven and a half stops at the center and six and a half at the corners for sharp handheld results across a wide range of conditions.

For video creators, the OM 3 supports high quality video recording up to sixty frames per second with efficient heat management for longer sessions and new OM Cinema video profiles. A dedicated video dial allows fast switching between stills video and slow or quick motion modes with frame rates ranging from one to one hundred twenty frames per second. The camera also features robust splash and dust resistance advanced on chip phase detection autofocus with over one thousand cross type points intelligent subject detection high speed continuous shooting Pro Capture for recording moments before the shutter is fully pressed customizable mode labels flexible video activation settings and support for external video lighting integration.
