Blending an expansive field of view with unmistakable fisheye character, the Canon RF 7-14mm f 2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM is an ultra wide zoom designed to produce bold, energetic photos and video. As the first fisheye lens created for the RF mount, it delivers an enormous 190 degree angle of view, offering both circular and diagonal coverage depending on focal length and sensor format, along with several thoughtful design touches that make working with such an extreme perspective more practical.

The ultra wide fisheye look introduces dramatic curvature and distortion that suits fast moving action and sports particularly well, while also serving as a creative choice for landscapes, nature, underwater shooting, astrophotography, and architectural subjects. Its optical construction features five ultra low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements that help maintain strong sharpness and accurate color while keeping the lens relatively compact and lightweight. Air Sphere and Super Spectra coatings are applied to reduce flare and ghosting, preserving contrast even when shooting into bright light.

Unlike conventional zoom lenses, changing focal lengths on this fisheye directly alters both the distortion and the way the frame is covered. At 7mm on a full frame camera, the lens functions as a fully circular fisheye with a sweeping 190 degree angle of view, while at 14mm it becomes a diagonal, frame filling fisheye capturing 180 degrees. When mounted on an APS C camera, a marked C position around 8.7mm indicates where vignetting disappears and the image fully covers the sensor, with noticeable vignetting present between 7mm and 8.7mm as the circular image exceeds the frame. Close focusing further emphasizes the dramatic spatial effects inherent to a fisheye design, allowing the lens to highlight exaggerated shapes and perspective created by its bulbous front element and extreme viewing angle.

With a minimum focusing distance of just 5.9 inches, the front of the lens can be placed roughly two inches from a subject, making it possible to emphasize fine textures and small details while the background remains visible and curves away in a pronounced fisheye arc. For video creators, this distinctive rendering is equally compelling, as the immense depth of field, sweeping coverage, and unique distortion offer a powerful way to isolate subjects within a scene. Unusually for a fisheye lens with a protruding front element, this design supports a rear drop in filter system, allowing compatibility with Canon's variable ND filter for more precise exposure control during video recording.

Focus breathing is kept to a minimum through a rear focus design, helping maintain consistent framing during focus pulls, and both internal focusing and internal zooming make the lens well suited for gimbal use. Autofocus is driven by a lead screw type STM combined with a position detecting sensor derived from Nano USM technology, resulting in fast and accurate performance for stills and smooth, quiet operation for video. The lens's extreme angle of view also makes it suitable for two dimensional monoscopic VR content, with full support provided through the Canon EOS VR System application.

Despite its capabilities, the lens remains relatively compact and lightweight at just over one pound and about 4.3 inches long. A removable petal style EW 76 lens hood is included, extending the overall length when attached, though it cannot be reversed for storage and will introduce vignetting on full frame cameras at focal lengths shorter than 14mm, while APS C users will see no vignetting between 8.7mm and 14mm. A customizable control ring and lens function button allow quick access to assigned settings, and a zoom limit or lock switch can be used to maintain consistent framing or prevent unintended zoom movement.

Built to L series standards, the lens offers robust weather sealing for challenging conditions, and the front element is treated with a fluorine coating that repels water and oils for easier cleaning. One of its most distinctive features is the rear drop in filter system originally introduced with Canon's EF EOS R adapters, which accommodates the bulbous front element and allows mounted filters to slide directly into the back of the lens. A clear filter is included, with optional variable neutral density and circular polarizing filters available, making it possible to change filters quickly without removing the lens from the camera.
